Objective To study the relationship between behavioral change and blood pressure among elderly patients with hypertension Methods Seventy one retired PLA cadres in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region, were included in the intervention group by random sampling Seventy four retired cadres with the similar background were included in the control group Health education intervention was conducted in the intervention group for two years During the intervention, blood pressure was measured periodically and questionnaire survey was conducted before and after interrention to both groups Results After intervention, the number of patients with normal blood pressure increased significantly in the intervention group in comparison with that in control group (χ 2=27 075, P<0 01) The number of patients whose blood pressure had decreased to normal was significantly higher among those compliant with doctor's orders than among those who failed to be compliant (χ 2=4 59, P<0 05) The healthy behavior forming rate of those with normal blood pressure (76 00%) was significantly higher than that of those with higher blood pressure (23 52%) Conclusion Patient compliance (taking anti hypertension drugs persistently) helps control hypertension effectively Low sodium diet, non smoking or reducing number of cigarettes smoked, appropriate exercise, and weight reduction help control hypertension to a certain degree
