TethyoSummary The Wuli Group in the Hoh Xil Tanggula Stratigraphic Region of the Tibetan plateau is a lithostratigraphic unit consisting of a sequence of clastic rocks, volcanic rocks, and carbonate rocks. It is over 1 000m thick and contains macrophytes, brachiopods and other fossils. The brachiopods from the carbonate rocks in the upper part of the Wuli Group have been reported and indicate an age of late Late Permian (Changxingian). The brachiopod specimens dealt with in this paper were collected from the lower part of the Wuli Group at the Kaixinling Coal Mine (Wuli Coal Mine) by the Sino Britain Comprehensive Geologic Expedition to the Tibetan plateau. The studies show that these brachiopods may be correlated, in generic and specific composition and palaeontological facies, with those from the Longtan Formation in the South of Jiangsu and Anhui, South China and in the Huayingshan of eastern Sichuan and with those from the Tuoba Formation around Changdu of eastern Xizang, as well as with those from th lower part of the Xuanwei Formation in western Guizhou, belonging to the forms common in South China, i.e. the early Late Permian (Wujiapingian) paralic facies of the coal measures. Based on this, the list of fossils identified by British Dr. Brunton C.H.C.was revised and some generic and specific names were corrected. Some mistakes in the citations of the data on the brachiopods from the Wuli Group and some stratigraphical names in the books “Geological evolution of the Tibetan Plateau” and Illustrated books of “Paleontological Atlas of the northwestern region (on the part of Qinghai)” were corrected too. Recently, Chen et al . (2000) established a new genus Tethyochonetes of the Rugosochonetidea. This genus was separated from the Waagenites . Based on the differences in the morphological characters and geological and geographical distributions, they transferred all the species originally referred to Waagenites from the Late Permian (Lopingian) strata of China to Tethyochonetes .
