Purpose To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture combined with anesthetics on the sympathetic adrenomedullar system in patients undergoing posterior cranial fossa surgeries. Methods Thirty patients were divided into the general anesthesia(GA) group, electroacupuncture(EA) group, and general anesthesia plus electroacupuncture (GA+EA) group.Peripheral blood samples were taken at certain time points before and after the operation, and the concentrations of plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline were determined. Results The catecholamine values in the EA group were markedly higher than those in the GA and GA+EA group at the beginning of and 3 hours after the operation. There were no significant differences among the three groups in the first 4 days after the operation. Also no significant changes in catecholamine levels were found between the GA and GA+EA groups during the operation, but they were increased significantly after the operation. Conclusion:In the light of stress,no superiority is exhibited by using EA in posterior cranial fossa surgeries compared with GA.However,GA+EA has a marked suppressive effect on catecholamine reactions in the patients undergoing posterior cranial fossa surgeries.
