Objective To determine the function of type-specific IgG antibody against group B streptococcal capsular polysac-charides in newborn infants with GBS infection and its clinical significance. Methods The blood sera were collected from neonates and their mothers at Beijing Children's Hospital. Type-Ⅲ specific IgG antibody against Group B Streptococcal capsular Polysaccharides was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) . GBS antigen was performed by countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis (CIE). Results In 113 newborn infants, 34 cases were found GBS antigen positive; 25 cases had the infected symptoms ; 9 cases had no infectious symptoms. The mean type-Ⅲ specific IgG antibody concentrations of newborn infants and their mothers were significantly lower in the infected group than those in the noninfected group, while the GBS antigen positive group was lower than the negative group too. Conclusions The type-specific anticapsular antibodies can protect neonates against invasive neonatal GBS infection. Assay of type-specific IgG antibody against group B streptococcal capsular polysaccharides is a supplementary method for diagnosing neonatal GBS infection.
