The values of superoxides (SOD) in erythrocyte, serum lipid peroxide (LPO) total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (HDL-C), whole blood relative viscosity (WBRV), plasma relative viscosity (PRV). haematokritwert (HT) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) have been measured in 74 patients with essential hypertension and 46 normal subjects. The results showed: (1) The mean values of LPO, TC, TG, WBRV, PRV of patients with essential hypertension were significantly higher than those of normal subjects, but the mean value of SOD was lower (P<0.01). (2) SOD was negatively correlated with TC, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), LDL-C/HDL-C and WBRV (r=-0. 317, P<0.01:r=-0.364, P<0.01:r=-0.55, P<0.01 and r=-0.282, P<0.05 respectively) but positively correlated with HDL-C/TC (r=-0.329, P<0.01). (3) LPO was positively correlated with age, systolic blood pressure, TC and PRV (r=0.229, P<0.05,r=0.35,P<0.01;r=0.544,P<0.01 and r=0.236, P<0.05 respectively) but negatively correlated with SOD (r=-0.467, P<0.01) and HDL/TC (r=-0.317, P<0.01 ). (4) The value of the SOD decreased but that of LPO increased with increase of age. It is suggested that changes in SOD. LPO, Blood lipid and blood viscosity correlated with one another in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension.
