Objective To identify regional activation of the human cerebral cortex in response to pleasant and unpleasant odors with functional MRI (fMRI) and to localize the olfactory centers and pathways. Method Twenty-two healthy volunteers were recruited in the study. Two kinds of odors were given to them through the personally developed instrument. One was vanillin, which was regarded as pleasant odor, and the unpleasant one was hydrogen sulfide. Block design was adopted in this experiment, and SE-EPI was performed on 1.5T MRI, the raw fMRI data were processed with MRIcro and SPM2 software. Results The pleasant odor activated the voxels in right hemisphere more than in left hemisphere, and the activation areas were present in gyrus frontalis superior, gyrus frontalis middle, gyrus frontalis inferior. Unpleasant odor activated the voxels in the left hemisphere more than in right hemisphere, and the activation areas were present in limbic lobe, parahippocampal gyrus, lenticular nucleus, tonsil of cerebellum and dorsomedial nucleus of thalamus. Conclusion BOLD-fMRI is a useful method for studying of human olfactory system.
