摘　　要：公元476年罗慕路斯·奥古斯都路斯的退位往往被看成罗马帝国衰亡的标志性事件,研究者们对这一事件有各种不同的理解。5世纪后期和6世纪前期的史料表明,当时的人们并没有将476年事件看成罗马帝国衰亡的标志性事件。对当时的罗马人来说,一个完全独立于东部朝廷的"西部帝国"并不存在。476年以后,奥多阿克和狄奥德里克等帝国西部的统治者们也仍然以罗马帝国的名义进行统治。但是,到6世纪前期,罗马帝国东部开始逐渐形成了一种"476年罗马帝国西部政权灭亡"的观念,这一观念的起源与当时罗马帝国西部和东部之间复杂的政治局势密切相关。The abdication of Romulus Augustulus in the year 476 is often considered as a landmark event signaling the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.The researchers have offered different interpretations of the significance of this event.The historical records dating back to the late fifth century and early sixth century show that the people at the time did not see it in that way,as there was not such a 'Western Empire' in theory,being completely independent from the Eastern Court,in the eyes of contemporary Romans.Indeed,after 476,the rulers such as Odoacer and Theoderic continued to rule in the name of the Roman Emperors.However,in the early sixth century,the idea of ' the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476' was gradually fermenting in the eastern part of the Roman Empire.The origin of this idea was closely related to the complex political situations between the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire.An explicit political intention was arguably involved in the formation of this idea.
