摘　　要：以整个生命为代价不顾一切地酷爱与坚持对自由的追求与执着是嘉尔曼的主导性性格,她唯一的追求就是绝对自由,她是自由的象征与精灵。嘉尔曼在追求自由的同时不仅受到时代背景、社会法律与道德规范的制约,也受到男权主流社会思想的影响,并且嘉尔曼这一形象是作者有意而为之。虽然嘉尔曼在挑战男权社会时以死告终,但却给世人留下深刻影响,激励世人在争取自由的道路上不断前进。The main characteristic of Carmen is the love and persistence of pursuing for freedom without considering the security of her whole life. The only thing she pursues is the absolute freedom which makes her the symbol and spirit of freedom. When Carmen is pursuing freedom, she is not only restricted by the historical back- ground, the social laws and moral rules and she is influenced by the mainstream ideology of the main-dominated society and even the female image of Carmen is been made on purpose by the writer. Although Carmen ended her life to challenge the main-dominated society, she makes a profound influence to the later generations and encourages the later generations to go forward for pursuing freedom.
