摘　　要：美国哈佛大学东亚语言文明系教授王德威在2005年出版的《被压抑的现代性——晚清小说论》中提出了"没有晚清何来五四"这一个论断,遭到众多国内学者的质疑。对质疑进行质疑立足于发掘王德威论断背后现代性的深层含义,从而警醒学者走出争论新旧文学时间界限的狭隘误区,思考王德威所表达的真实观点——孕育五四文学现代性的晚清文学,实际上已经具备了发展多样性的现代性特征。David Der-wei Wang professor of Department of East Asian languages and civilization at Harvard University in the United States published “Repressed Modernities of Late Qing Fiction on the Late Qing Novel in 2005,and put forward the idea No Late Qing No May Fourth Movement” ,which was questioned by many domestic scholars. Based on analyzing Wang＇s deep meaning of modernity,are should enable scholars to avoid being misled in the debate over the time limit of old and new literature, and focus on Wang＇s viewpoints concerning the late Qing literature of the May 4th literature,in which modernity has dready had the characteristics of diversitv.
