To study the correlation between the number of mast cells and the area of collagen fibers in the mammary gland of the dairy cow, the specimens from the mammary gland of dairy cow during the lactation and non - lactation periods were collected. A toluidine blue staining method was used to observe the changes in the number and distribution of the mast cells, and a picric sirius rod staining method was used to observe the changes in the characteristics of the area and distribution of collagen fibers. The results showed that the number of mast cells during the non - lactation period was significantly more than ( P 〈 0.01 ) that during the lactation period. The area of collagen fibers during the non - lactation period was significantly larger than (P 〈 0.01 ) that during the lactation period. The number of mast cells increased, and the area of collagen fibers was also big during the non - lactation period ;the number of mast cells decreased, and the area of collagen fibers was also small during the lactation period. The results indicate that there was significant positive correlation between the number of mast cells and the area of collagen fi- bers in the mammary gland of dairy cow (r = 0. 677,P 〈 0.05 ).
