摘　　要：TOEFL是目前规模最大的国际性、标准化外语考试之一,自1964年面世以来,已有50年的历史。从TOEFL的发展过程来看,它经历了从纸笔测试(PBT,paper-based test)到网络测试(iBT,Internet-based test)的过程。从试卷结构、测试内容和测试形式来看,TOEFL主要经历了五个发展阶段。从测试学角度讲,TOEFL不仅见证了现当代语言测试理论的发展历程,也反映了现代语言学理论、语言测试学理论、心理测量学、社会实践等诸学科之间的协调和统一。探究TOEFL的历时变迁对我国大规模外语测试具有重要的启发意义。Since its birth in the 1960s, TOEFL has a history of 50 years and now it is one of the world＇s largest standardized international language tests. In terms of the structure and content of the test, TOEFL has shown the tendency of developing from paper-based test （PBT） to Intemet-based test （IBT） and experienced five periods in its history. These five stages coincide with the development of modem language testing theories as well as linguistic theo- ries, psychometrics and language testing practice. This study of the development of TOEFL will also throw light on China＇s large scale language tests.
