Objective To explore the status of anxiety and depression in elder soldiers and to explore the main influencing factors so as to provide theoretical basis for subsequent intervention. Methods 2 681 soldiers were assessed with self designed questionnaire and Symptom Checklist-90 item (SCL-90) at 6 months before retirement (enlistment stage) and at 2 weeks before retirement (awaiting-retirement stage). The results were compared with the national norm of Chinese soldiers. Results Factor scores of anxiety and depression of soldiers in awaiting-retirement stage were significantly higher than those in enlistment stage ( P 〈 0.05 ) and national norm ( P 〈 0. O1 ). The incidence rates of anxiety and depression were significantly higher in soldiers in awaiting- retirement than those in enlistment stage (χ2 = 57. 561 ,P 〈 0. 01 ). The will of retirement, being resettled properly or not, being only child or not, level of civilization entered the regression equation of mood disorder ( R2 = 0. 506, F = 12. 057, P 〈 0.01 ). Condusions The incidence of anxiety and depression is relatively high in soldiers awaiting retirement. The main influencing factors consists of the will of retirement, being resettled properly or not, being only child or not and level of civilization.
