On the basis of the data obtained through the cruise carried out in the upper reach of the Pearl River Estuary in April 2011,the distribution character of DO( dissolved oxygen) and correlating factors were analyzed and the relationship between DO and salinity,p H,COD( chemical oxygen demand),ammonia, and other environmental factors were studied, the oxygen consumption factors was discussed, and the relationship between the hypoxia and concentration of sulfide in the surface sediment was initially explored. The result showed that the surface and bottom water were in the state of hypoxia between the mouth of East River Mainstream and the mouth of Dongguan River, and the concentration of DO in water were less than 3. 5 mg / L at most sites. COD and NO3- N decreased downstream, while ammonia increased. The correlation between DO and COD was negative, while positive between DO and ammonia. Oxygen depletion by organic chemical oxygen consumption was evident. The concentration of sulfide in the surface sediment was much higher at the coastal water of Xinsha City in Dongguan, the mouth of Danshui River, and in the Taiping Waterway, where the concentration of DO at bottom was much lower.
