摘　　要：尽管拉丁词mathematica的汉文音译在17世纪初就已出现,但"数学"作为一个与英文mathematics相对应的学科代名词,是20世纪30年代经过反复讨论并由教育部以文件形式确定下来的.中国古代代表数学这一学科的名词很多,如数、数术、数学、算、算学、算术等等,西学东渐以来,又出现了几何、度数之学等新名词.考察了这些数学学科代名词的使用情况与历史演变.Today the Chinese term shuxue corresponds to the English term mathematics.Correspon—dence between the Chinese term and the English one was fixed in 1930s,although the Chinese translitera—tion of the Latin word mathematica appeared at the beginning of the 17th century.Traditionally,there were some different terms standing for the subj ect of mathematics,for instance,shu （number）,shushu （art or method of numbers）,shuxue （knowledge of numbers）,suan （computatuion）,suanxue （knowledge of com—putation）,suanshu （procedure of computation）,and so on.In 1607,Xu Guanqi and Matto Ricci translated the term mathematica into Jihe which corresponds to the term geometry today.The present paper deals with the historical evolution of the series terms and their meanings in different times.
