摘　　要：《好兵》是英国现代主义大师福特的代表作。迄今为止,评论界对该小说的研究主要集中于技巧以及主题方面,忽视了小说标题"好兵"的反讽内涵以及主人公爱德华的军官身份。帝国军官爱德华没有为大英帝国版图冲锋陷阵,而是通过婚外恋在两性关系领域实践帝国主义,但他既无法在家庭内部维持经济和宗教优势,也无力挽救庄园被美国人收购的命运。通过塑造爱德华这一帝国军官形象,福特既批评了世纪之交时的大英帝国不断向外扩张版图的举动,又对大英帝国在帝国内部和国际舞台面临的衰落命运表示出关注。The Good Soldier is a masterpiece of Ford Madox Ford. Up to now, critics have mostly focused on its thematic meaning and narrative techniques while neglecting the ironic connotation of its title and the identity of its protagonist Captain Edward Ashburnham. In fact, Edward practices imperialism through extramarital affairs instead of fighting overseas for the British Empire. However, neither could he maintain economical and religious advantages within family, nor could he save the estate from being bought by American ＂new money＂. Through the depiction of Captain Edward Ashburnham, Ford criticizes the imperialistic actions of the British Empire and expresses his concerns upon its decline at the turn of the century.
