As one of the most renowned contemporary American writers, Philip Roth has produced more than 30 novels and won various literary prizes at home and abroad since his debut, Goodbye, Columbus(1959) in 1960; yet there had been no major critical work about this most controversial and galvanizing writer until 2013 when Roth Unbound: A Writer and His Books was published. This book by Claudia Roth Pierpont presents an exploration of this great writer through his art as well as a wealth of biographical details and unpublished materials. This thesis explores into this biographical work and Roth's works, attempting to discuss both Roth's wild art of life and his weird ethics in writing and trying to figure out the major reasons for his failed efforts in obtaining a Nobel Prize in Literature, so as to provide Chinese scholars with a peculiar point of view on this peculiar and creative writer.
