摘　　要：托马斯·沃尔夫是上世纪二三十年代活跃于美国文坛的著名小说家。他以"百科全书式"的人生探索和掺合着迷惘与追求、痛苦与激愤的复杂情感世界,显示出超越南方地域文化特征的思想和精神内涵,形成了自己别具特色的创作风格。短篇小说《远与近》是他的优秀作品。在这部作品中他让生命的远景和近景在时光中交错,留给读者很大的想象空间。读者可以想到距离产生美,也可以想到人与人之间的远近虚实,乃至远中有近,近中有远等诸多意味。Thomas Wolfe was a major American novelist of the early 20th century. With his ＂encyclopedic＂ explora- tion of life and complex emotional world of confusion and pursuit, affliction and sensation, he displayed the connota- tion and spiritual essence beyond the southern characteristics of regional culture and formed his own distinctive style. The short story The Far and the Near is one of his masterpieces. In the work he makes the close shot and dis-tant view of life staggered in time, and leaves much room for readers＇ imagination. You may imagine the numerous meanings of ＂the distance produces beauty＂, you may imagine the distance and the void and substantial between people, and you may imagine the meanings of the near in the far and the far in the near.
