The Shugang ancient city site is located on the south edge of the Shugang hill north of Yangzhou, Jiangsu province. Its rammed-earth walls are still in good conditions. Modern canals and ponds surrounding the walls are closely related to ancient moats. Between April and July 2013, in a project to protect the moats and city walls, a joint archaeological team consisting of archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Nanjing Museum and the Yangzhou Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted excavations at two openings in the east section of the northern city wall, the north side of corresponding modern pond, the northeastern outer corner and corresponding north and east sides of the modern ponds. An area of 1,100 square metres in total was excavated. The findings include remains of rammed-earth walls and edges of moats dating to the Han to Song period. The northeast outer corner of the city wall was revealed. The rammed-earth walls were first built in the Han dynasty or later. Excavations show that before the construction of Baoyou city during the Southern Song dynasty, the city walls were amended several times in the Six Dynasties, the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty. Of the two openings in the east section of the northern city wall, the one on the west formed during the Ming to Qing dynasties and the other should possibly not be associated with any facilities such as city gate.
