摘 要:Generally, linguists categorize sound symbolism into two major types: direct sound symbolism and synesthetic sound symbolism. In English literature, Alfred Tennyson is a great Victorian poet adept in sensitive uses of the musical qualities of words to emphasize his poetic meanings and sensations. By analyzing his two famous short poems("The Eagle" and "Break, Break, Break") from a phonological perspective, this thesis intends to probe into how sound symbolism, especially the synesthetic sound symbolism, is applied to express his poetic emotions.Generally, linguists categorize sound symbolism into two major types: direct sound symbolism and synesthetic sound symbolism.
