The quantitative indicators of epidermal cells and stomata for different periods of each seedling leaves were systematically studied using two maize cultivars Jiudan48 and Songyu656 as materials. The results showed that, in this study, the length and width of epidermal cells and stomata on each leaf upper and lower epidermal were increased gradually with the leaf growth. The values for the initial sampling of the length and width of upper and lower epidermal cells and stomata of each blade were similar. The upper epidermal cells were short and wide, the lower epidermal cells were long and narrow; the stomata on the upper epidermis were shorter than the lower epidermal stomata, but the stomata on the upper epidermis were wider than the lower epidermal stomata; the areas of upper and lower epidermal cells and stomata for each leaf were increased gradually with the increase of the leaf area; the areas of upper epidermal cells were less than that of lower epidermal cells, but the areas of the stomata on upper epidermis was larger than that of lower epidermis; the cell density and stoma density of the upper and lower epidermis were decreased gradually with the increase of leaf area.
