摘　　要：威尔斯的《时间机器》是维多利亚时期大英帝国的一面镜子。威尔斯在小说中采用以后殖民主义和东方主义为核心的帝国主义叙事,体现了由帝国繁荣所引发的资产阶级的浪漫情怀。但同时,他又用现代主义叙事表达了对帝国的繁荣能否持续的担忧,并对帝国的殖民统治的合理性提出了质疑。帝国主义和现代主义的双重叙事赋予了《时间机器》耐人寻味的意蕴,表达了维多利亚中后期作为社会中坚力量的知识精英内心挣扎的某种极端状态。The Time Machine by Wells reflects the British Empire of the Victorian time.In the novel,Wells applies imperialist narration which,featured with Post-colonialism and Orientalism,expresses romantic themes stimulated by the unprecedented flourish of the imperialism.Meanwhile,he applies modernist narration to show his concern for the continuity of the glory of the empire and questions the rightness of colonization.With dual narration of Imperialism and Modernism,Wells shows the conflicting state of mind of the intellectual elites of the middle and late Victorian time.
