摘　　要：约翰·契弗在其作品中塑造了一系列"被阉割的父亲"形象。他们虽有父亲之名,但由于种种原因无法履行父亲应尽的责任。这种"父亲缺失"现象乃是二十世纪五、六十年代的美国社会生活无序状态的隐喻,急剧的社会变化使人们在思想上、文化上失去了方向,感到生活荒谬,无所适从。契弗以其犀利的目光,敏锐地抓住了这一社会问题,塑造了一系列在"父亲"缺失环境下长大的儿子形象,表达了对权威、秩序的渴望,对重建强有力的、能驾驭新时代的价值观的渴望。John Cheever depicted a group o f ＂unmanned fathers＂in his novels.They failed to assume the responsibility of being fathers though they gave birth to their children.However,the problem of＂father absence＂is the metaphor of American society in 50s-60 sin 20th,that is,dramatic social changes destroyed ideology and culture,making people feel absurd and bewildered and they didn＇t know how to face life.Sensitively,Cheever caught the social issue to express his desire for authority,social order and new potent social value in the new era.
