A route of partial hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene was introduced, which was safe, green, efficient and energy-saving. Catalyst system was the key factor in the route. The research on Ru-based catalysts for liquid-phase partial hydrogenation of benzene in recent years was reviewed, including the influence of precursors, preparation methods, supports, promoters and additives on catalyst activity and the selectivity to the products. The commercial technologies of partial hydrogenation of benzene of Asahi Kasei Corporation and Shenma Group were introduced. The market prospect of cyclohexene is prosperous. The partial hydrogenation process of benzene is a route of high economic benefit. It is crucial for the catalytic technology to make breakthroughs. But there exists the problems of high cost and easy inactivation of catalyst, and low cyclohexene yield.
