The watermelon ' Heimeiren' grown in pots containing sand were treated to investigate the effects of magnesium concen- trations of 0, 24, 48, 96, 192 nag ·L -1on carbon and nitrogen metabolism of watermelon leaves. The results showed that magnesi- um concentration affected the entire growth process of watermelon. In each period, the effect of magnesium on contents of chloro- phyll, carotenoids, soluble sugar, soluble protein and nitrate reductase activity of ' Heimeiren ' watermelon presented to increase to a maximum followed by decreasing. The content of each substance and nitrate reductase activity reached to a maximum for the same period when magnesium concentration was 48 mg ~ L - x. Under 48 mg~ L - 1 magnesium concentration, contents of chlorophyll, ca- rotenoids, soluble sugar, soluble protein and nitrate reductase activity of ' Heimeiren' watermelon were vine stretching period 〉 flowering period 〉 expansion period. So, the suitable magnesium concentration was 48 rng · L-1. Watermelon was sensitive to mag- nesium deficiency when it was expanding, adding magnesium fertilizer at the appropriate period could mitigate the effects of magnesi- um deficiency on carbon and nitrogen metabolism of watermelon leaves.
