Objective To explore the impact of rotavims infection on the changes of serum trace elements, such as zinc, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium and lead through case- control study among children with rotavirus gastroenteritis and children with non - infectious diarrhea. Methods Forty- seven children with rotavirus gastroenteritis and 56 children with non - infectious diarrhea were randomly selected to serve as the research subjects, and the levels of serum zinc, iron, copper, calcium, magnesium and lead were determined. Results The levels of serum zinc, calcium and magnesium were significantly lower in children with rotavirus gastroenteriti8 than in children with non - infectious diarrhea (P 〈 0.05), while the level of serum lead was signif- icantly higher (P 〈 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the levels of serum copper and iron between the two groups (P 〉0.05). Conclusions Children with rotavirus enteritis are more susceptible to suffering from trace element imbalance as compared with children with non - infectious diarrhea; and hence, monitoring of serum levels of trace elements should be intensified during the treatment of rotavirus enteritis.
