From the points of "filial piety" and "respecting one' s elders" that characterize Chinese culture, we compare the differences between Chinese and western cultures. It points out the Chinese "filial piety" is expected of one' s children while there is no same requirements for western children. In China, it is advocated to respect the old, while in the west the old is said to be independent of their children. "Respecting one's elders" means the good manners used in communication in China which arises from "filial piety". It is for the sake of their parents' happiness and being a good person, whereas the good manner in west is aimed at doing things better and smoothly and its root is western religion.
