Objective To explore temporary starvation induced changes in brain glucose metabolism in rats. Methods Thirteen male Wistar rats were used in the present study, and were divided into control(n=6) and starvation groups(n=7).The rats in control group were supplied with sufficient food and water. While in the starvation group, animals were deprived of food but allowed free access to water for 15 h before the PET-CT scan.Anesthetized rats were injected with18F-FDG via the tail veins. Then rats were scanned for PET-CT,and image data was co-registered with a T2 WI MRI template using SPM8 software.Image J was employed to draw regions of interest(ROIs) from the MRI template and acquire ROI activity information from the PET images. Results In the starvation group vs.controls,18F-FDG uptake(FU) was increased in the caudate putamen(18.19%),internal capsula(18.41%),thalamus(10.00%),hypothalamus(17.45%),substantia nigra(15.28%),ventral tegmentum(15.08%) and pons(13.33%,all:P 〈0.05).However,FU was decreased in motor(15.34%) and entorhinal cortices(7.04%,all:P〈 0.05).Conclusion The glucose metabolism distribution map in the temporary starvation rat brains were substantially changed versus controls.PET with18F-FDG can demonstrate excitement and inhibition of different brain areas even in cases of temporary starvation.
