摘　　要：Jeong Yakyong丁若镛 （a.k.a. Tasan 茶山, 1762-1836） was a leading scholar of practical philosophy （shixue 实学） in the late Chosun Period. If arguably the early Chosun Dynasty （1392-1910） was characterised as the peak of the Zhuzi Theory on nature and reason, then the late period was pregnant with practical philosophy, which later emerged as a most influential school of thought. The period from the mid- to late eighteenth century, in which Tasan lived, witnessed a gradual recovery of society and economy previously impacted by foreign invasions, where Korean society gradually changed from an agrarian to an industrial-commercial one.
