Objective Employing action-oriented teaching method (AOTM) to offer health education for patients with permanent vesicostomy (PV) and assess its effect. Methods Sixty-two patients with PV were divided into observation group (n =32) and control group (n :30) in random. The patients in the control group received general health education, and those in the observation group, AOTM was carried out to guide their behavior. One year later, Life Quality Inventory (QOLI 74) and self- care agency scale were used to assess the quality of life and self-care ability of patients in the two groups, and the complications of one year of indwelling catheter were compared. Results The scores of quality of life and self-care ability of patients in the observation group were significantly higher than that in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (t=6.559, 13.589,P〈0.01), and the complication rate was lower (χ2 =5.645,P〈0.05). Conclusion Applying action-oriented teaching method to guide patients with permanent vesicostomy can improve their quality of life, raise their self-care ability and decrease the incidence of indwelling-catheter-related complications.
