Objective: To compare the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of alcohol and aqueous extract of Calonyction muricatum. Methods: Analgesic effect of Calonyction muricatum was studied by mice acetic acid-induced twisting test and hot plate test. Anti-inflammatory effect of Calonyction muricatum was studied by the swelling of mice pinna induced by xylene and the cotton granuloma in mice. Results: Different dose groups of alcohol extract of Calonyction muricatum could reduce the pain twisting times in mice and increase the pain thresholds in mice (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). It could inhibit the swelling of mice pinna induced by xylene and the cotton granuloma in mice (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). High dose group of aqueous extract of Calonyction muricatum could reduce the twisting times in mice. It could inhibit the swelling of mice pinna induced by xylene and the cotton granuloma in mice (P〈0.05). Conclusion: The alcohol and aqueous extracts of Calonyction muricatum had analgesic and anti- inflammatory effects, and alcohol extract were better than aqueous extract on analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
