Phytophagous insects can get nutrients from their digestion and assimilation of foods after feeding, which provides a guarantee for their normal growth and development. There are great difference in the quality and counts of nutrients. In this study,Chenopodium glaucum ,Glycine max ,Helianthus annuus ,Zea mays and So-lanum tuberosum were used as the test host plants to feed the Loxostege sticticalis larvae. The results indicated that the relative consumption, relative growth rate and food utilization rate of L .sticticalis larvae feeding differ-ent plants were significantly different (P 〈0.05)and the activities of their intestinal digestive enzymes were en-tirely different.Feeding with the favorite plant Chenopodium glaucum ,three nutritional indexes were obviously better than those of the others, and the activity of midgut digestive enzyme was the highest.Though relative con-sumption,relative growth rate and food utilization rate of the unfavorable host plants Zea mays and Solanum tu-berosum were lower than the others, but the enzymatic activity was increasing along with increasing feeding time. This phenomenon may be the adaption of insects to unfavorable host plants.
