现代英语第三人称代词单数双性通指问题研究

摘　　要：现代英语人称代词系统缺少第三人称代词单数阴阳性通指词。传统英语语法学者们曾在18世纪末建议使用he作为第三人称单数阴阳性通指词,他们也做了很大努力,但he至今未被英语使用者广泛接受,本文探讨了其中的原因。现代英语语法学者们试图找到一种替代形式,他们提出的建议有:使用he or she的合成形式;使用he和she的缩合形式,如s/he,(s)he;从英语方言或其他语言中借用;单数的they等。本文分析了这些临时性替代用法的优缺点,预测最有可能弥补这个缺位的可行性词语是they,并提出了这种预测的依据。本文最后提出了在目前英语学习和使用方面如何避免第三人称代词单数阴阳性通指词使用偏误的建议。In present-day English,the personal pronoun system lacks the 3rd person pronoun referring back to single,dual-gender noun. In 18 th century,traditional grammarians suggested using ＂he＂instead and they made some efforts to popularize it. But unfortunately ＂he＂is not admitted as the 3rd singular dual-sex PP by the majority of English-speaking world. The reasons of this vacancy are explored in this study. Some modern grammarians are trying to find a candidate for the 3rd singular dual-sex PP. Their ideas include using the combined form of ＂he＂and＂she＂,using the contracted form of＂he＂and＂she＂,such as s/he,（ s） he,borrowing from English dialects,and using single ＂they＂. This paper explores the strong and week points of the above temporary substituting ways. Prediction of the most possible candidate for the vacancy is made and suggestions are given on how to prevent errors in studying and using of English at present.
