Since the second day of the Japanese army entered Nanjing, some Japanese diplomats and consular officials returned to Nanjing in succession with the army. Their duty was to coordinate the relations between Japanese authorities and the international committee for the Nanking safety zone so as to avoid unnecessary diplomatic dispute. After returning to Nanjing, Japanese diplomats saw many Japanese atrocities, and had no effective way to prevent them. As a Japanese diplomat, they, on the one hand, for reasons of Japan' s national interests, tried their best to avoid causing diplomatic disputes; They, on the other hand, tried hard to cover up the atrocities to prevent the news of the Japanese atrocities to spread out in order to maintain the "face" of Japan and the Japanese "honour". Between human conscience and national interests, Japanese diplomats apparently chose the latter.
