摘　　要：象征艺术手法是劳伦斯小说创作的有力武器,用以呈现人物细腻、复杂、无意识的精神和心理活动。劳伦斯在中篇小说《狐》中选用狐狸这一动物形象作为中心象征物,以此中心象征物推动情节的发展,形成小说的节奏并表达了作者的主题动机。狐狸这一主题的象征意象的使用既具有主题性又具有结构性,而隐伏在狐狸及其他关键意象后的是贯穿劳伦斯创作始终的二元论的哲学思想。Imagism is one powerful device for D. H. Lawrence to depict the subtle, complicated and unconscious mental or psychological activities of his characters. In the novella The Fox, Lawrence uses ＂the fox＂ as the central image to develop the plot and to illuminate his motif. The use of the image of the fox is therefore thematic and structural, and hidden behind such an image and several other key symbolic elements is Lawrence＇ s dichotomy philosophy which underlines most of his writings.
