Objective To estimate the radiation dose in adult patients undergoing whole-body dual-modality ^18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with the automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) technique. Methods Altogether 71 adult patients (40 men/31 women) who underwent whole-body dual-modality ^18F-FDG PET/CT were reviewed. The effective doses for patients were obtained from CT scan by dose-length product and PET scan using [lfuorine-18]-lfuoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose, which was calculated based on International Commission on Radiological Protection recommendations. Results The average of whole-body PET/CT effective doses from PET and CT were (6.0±1.0) mSv (range:3.8-9.0 mSv) and (6.8±1.9) mSv (range:4.8-13.5 mSv), respectively, resulting in the total patient dose of (12.8±2.2) mSv (range: 10.3-21.3 mSv). Conclusion By using ATCM technology on whole-body PET/CT scanning, the effective dose of CT scanning was about 53%of the total effective dose, which indicated that the ATCM technique could reduce the radiation dose for patients undergoing CT scanning to some extent.
