The interaction between sophorolipids and polyacrylamide (PAM) were investigated by the determi-nation of surface tension and apparent viscosity. The results indicated that addition of PAM to the sophorolipid solution gives rise to the slighly increased surface tension and critical micelle concentration ( CMC) ( about 30~40 mg/L) . The surface tension of sophorolipid/PAM solution is found to be mainly affected by the concen-tration of sophorolipids. With the increasement of temperature, the surface tension of sophorolipid/PAM solution decreases slightly, while the CMC remains unchanged. Addition of sodium chloride to the solution leads to the slightly decreased surface tension. The apparent viscosity of the PAM solution increases in different degrees with the addition of sophorolipids, which may attribute to the mixed micelles formed between sophorolipids and the“hydrophobic microdomains” of PAM. The maximum apparent viscosity of the sophorolipid/PAM solution is obtained at the sophorolipid concentration of 30 mg/L. The mixture of sophorolipids and polyacrylamide can significantly reduce the surface tension and increase the apparent viscosity of the aqueous solution, and so it has good potential to be used in enhanced oil recovery.
