The Plutarch' s works are twofold, Plutarch' s Lives and Moralia, which is the outcome of a long tradition of Plutarch' s texts' transmission and reception of his 126 books. This division formed in the Lamprias Catalogue which was composed in the third or fourth century, and afterwards, various versions in manuscripts, editions and translations gradually formulated the present situation. Chinese scholars have misunderstood the two compiled corpora as two single books composed by Plutarch at his time. The Chinese title of the 50 Lives, The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, imitating the Renaissance version of Amyot' s French translation and North' s English translation though, not only ignored their cultural backgrounds and the characteristics of their times, but also confused them with the extent 46 Parallel Lives which Plutarch composed in a unique frame by juxtaposing Greeks and Romans to compare. Plutarch's Lives and Parallel Lives are different in their contents and concepts and should not be interchanged in use.
