摘　　要：司各特1819年创作的小说《艾凡赫》标志着其创作主题与体裁的突变,动机众说纷纭,至今尚无定论。司各特在小说中书写的中世纪骑士精神,是可能解开这一疑问的答案。作为团结各阶级与民族的粘合剂,骑士精神具有跨越阶级与民族的特征,对法国大革命后英国社会所面临的阶级矛盾问题与民族冲突问题有着重要的现实意义与指导作用,彰显了司各特作为保守党人对稳定与和谐的社会秩序的渴望,以及对国家认同感与身份归属感的追求。这才是他创作《艾凡赫》的真正原因以及意义所在。The novel Ivanhoe by Walter Scott in 1819 marked an important turn in the theme and genre of his novel writings.The reasons have been discussed for long but not a convincing conclusion has been established yet.The medieval chivalry depicted in this novel may be the key to the puzzle.Chivalry transcends the boundaries of classes and ethnic groups,and thus plays an instructive role in solving the numerous conflicts in England then,a country which fell heavily under the influence of French Revolution.It demonstrates Scott's political role as conservative party member who was keen on the steadiness and harmony of the society,as well as the national identity,which all together contributed to his motives of writing the novel Ivanhoe.
