Traditional English Grammar distinguishes two cleft structures, i.e."It-clefts"and"Wh-clefts". They are used to give focus or emphasis on a certain element in a clause. It seems that any element in a clause can be highlighted by the use of these two cleft structures. But this is not necessarily the case. Although"Wh-clefts"can be used to highlight the finite verb(s) in a clause, it conveys a meaning strikingly different from what is conveyed by another structure in English---traditionally known as"Emphatic Do"--- which is used to highlight the finite verb(s) in a clause. Meanwhile,"Emphatic Do"structure, while highlighting the finite verb(s), is similar to"It-clefts"and"Wh-clefts"both in structure and function yet different from other Operators(or Auxiliaries) in that these Operators highlight the focus through the nucleus rather than cleave the finite verb(s) into two parts: do with the finite features and a non-finite verb. Therefore, like"It-clefts"and"Wh-clefts","Emphatic Do"structure is, in nature, another cleft structure in English, i.e."Do-clefts".
