Based upon the biblical sense of prophecy, Boring takes Plato's promulgation of Socrates' s discourse for a secular example, and regards it as a kind of prophetic phenomenon in which the inspired Plato describes what the historical Socrates would have said. In the same vein, this article appropriates the secular example of prophecy in terms of Boring's third type of ecstasy, in which the prophet passively observes that the deity speaks through him and both will and consciousness remain intact and the prophet speaks what is revealed to him as a divine message, and applies this poetic extasy to Gerard Manley Hopkins' s poetry. To represent a poet's poetic development in terms of unity is a fictional rendering of the fragmentation of a poetic mind. Having discovered Duns Scotus' s conceptualization of "haecceitas," Hopkins deconstructs the concept and projects it into the poet part of his being. As a poet, Hopkins finds pleasure and delight at nature's variety. To get the meaning of what nature is, Hopkins uses "instress" and "inscape" as his primary ontological and epistemological tools under the influence of Duns Scotus, who made distinction between the general nature and the particular. Through these conceptual devices, the poet strives to be open to the whole of spiritual reality, and has firm beliefs that "Christ being me and me being Christ" is the process of reaching spiritual truth of which we know only the fragmentary parts. Through his ek-stactic eyes, the poet, like a dreamer, can perceive the hidden whole out of the unrelated fragments. Based upon the faith, Hopkins, then, speaks and spells out prophetic voices which become an ek-static event of speech acts in his poetry, thereby elaborating his poetics of extasy.
