African potato(AP) as one of the important drugs developed newly in South Africa is a commonly used traditional medicine for treating diabetes, and it also be used to resist tumor and infection. Animal experiments shows that AP has an effect of reducing blood sugar, which is positively related to the dosage, but its hypoglycemic mechanism is not clear, which greatly influences the development and utilization of AP. This article summaries from the three aspects of AP as researches of reducing blood glucose effect, possible mechanism of hypoglycemic effect, and safety, analyzes and arranges the research progress on the effective constituents and action mechanism of treating diabetes with AP, and concludes that the potential hypoglycemic mechanism of AP can be divided into three aspects as stimulating the release of insulin, resisting oxidation and resisting inflammatory. It turns out that the research emphasis in the future is to study and confirm the effects and action targets of AP ulteriorly based on the animal models, in order to provide system information for researching the hypoglycemic mechanism of AP deeply.
