To investigate the biological characteristics of feline calicivirus (FCV) HRB-SS isolated from a diseased cat, the isolate was identified by the methods of virology, molecular biology and bioinformatic. The results showed that the virus was able to induce cytopathic effect and the plaque when it infected the CRFK cells. Nucleotide sequence analysis results of the hypervariable region showed that the FCV HRB-SS was closely related to the vaccine strains CVXPOLYCAP (78.2%), but with the lowest homology to the China isolates of CH-JL (67.9%) and GD (68.8%). The analysis results of deduced amino acid sequence indicated that the FCV HRB-SS had the highest homology (86.7%) with 12Q087-5, UTCVM-NH12 and FCLF4, and had only 73.9% homology with China isolates. Phylogenetic tree analysis manifested that the FCV HRB-SS and China isolates were located in different cluster. The present study suggested that the FCV HRB-SS and the China isolates originated from different ancestors.
