摘　　要：《了不起的盖茨比》讲述的故事发生在美国短暂实施禁酒令的特殊时期,被称为"爵士时代的编年史家"的菲茨杰拉德在小说中大张旗鼓地描写饮酒作乐,塑造禁酒文化造就的微妙人物。本文认为,作品中酒精是文化符号,饮酒是凝视下的狂欢,是消费主义怂恿下的展示,为社会转型期的道德风尚和价值变迁做了标注。年轻人的"表演"使新消费理念转化为一种具体的流行生活模式,帮助形成了一支对抗克勤克俭生活理念的力量。如果我们将小说置于禁酒令的语境之中,就能够解读出这部文学名著中涵容的深刻的历史、文化和道德内涵。Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is set in the short but special period of Prohibition,in which the author,the known 'historiographer of the Jazz Age',describes in great detail the life of drinking and dissipation and creates complex characters that Prohibition produced.Alcohol in the context becomes a symbol and drinking aperformance under gaze,a display and moral rebellion of the young generation,supplying a cultural note towards the changing social mores and moral values in time of America's transi-tion toward a consumer society.Such display in fact helps popularize the consumer culture,advertize a lifestyle based on consumerist concepts and serve as a counter-force against the traditional values of industry,restraint and simple living.By placing the novel against the context of Prohibition,we can decipher much of its coded historical,cultural and ethical messages.
