Objective: To determine urinary trace elements levels in children with and without obesity, and to assess if trace elements influence the risk of obesity. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between levels of trace elements and body mass index( BMI). Methods: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry( ICP- MS) was used to determine the contents of Fe,Zn,Cu in 60 children( age 5 ~ 7: 29 obese children,31 no- obese children). Independent t test was applied to assess the difference of trace elements contents in samples. Correlations between variables were tested with the use of Pearson's correlation coefficient. Result: Obese children had lower Fe,Zn,Cu contents, the values of them were 27. 9 ± 12. 4 μg/dl,41. 4 ± 21. 5 μg/dl and 1. 8 ± 0. 6 μg/dl. Fe,Zn,Cu contents in urine( P = 0. 00) were the independent factors significantly influencing the risk of obesity in children. The values of BMI for children had positive correlation with their mothers' BMI values( 0 r 1) and they were negatively related to the levels of Fe,Zn,Cu( r 0). The decreasing level of trace elements was associated with obesity.
