In order to enhance the efficiency of aerobic digestion of excess sludge in wastewater treatment plants ,the low-voltage direct current field has been exerted in the excess sludge aerobic digestion process. Under different electric field conditions, the changing situation of organic substances (characterized by MLSS),total phosphorus and settlingability (characterized by SV) in sludge, is studied. The effects of electric field on the sludge aerobic digestion efficiency are discussed. The experimental results show that when the direct voltage is 5 V,after it has been electrified for 12 days intermittently, the groups are electrified for 1,2,3 h/d, separately ,the MISS of sludge removing rates reach 39.50% ,44.50% ,44.75% ,respectively. Compared with the group which has not been electrified, these groups are 33.90%, 50.85%, 51.69% higher respectively. It is found that when the electric field is under 1 h/d condition, dehydrogenase activity and the total number of bacteria in a certain period are higher than that of the group which has not been electrified. The experiments show that the low-voltage direct current has positive effect on sludge aerobic digestion capacity.
