摘　　要：从文明和希望的象征、破坏和毁灭的象征以及地位和权力的象征等方面对英国作家威廉·戈尔丁的代表作《蝇王》中火的象征寓意进行了探讨,提出这些象征寓意旨在凸现小说"希望通过揭示社会的种种弊端,追溯人性的缺陷"的目的,揭示作家所谓的人性的丑恶,突出强化小说的主题。This paper attempts to study the symbolic implications of ＂fire＂ in William Golding＇ s Lord of the Flies. It contends that the ＂fire＂ in the novel symbolizes civilization and hope, damage and destruction, and status and power. It also argues that Golding used the fire symbol to ＂attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature,＂ and to make readers aware of the ＂savagery＂ and ＂evils＂ in human nature.
