To elucidate the mechanism of adaptability to environment for needles, antioxidant enzyme activity of Pinus taiwanensis and Pinus massoniana at different altitude and slope aspect were compared in Daiyun Mountain. Results showed that MDA content of P. massonianawere was significantly higher than those of P. taiwanensis at the same altitude. Malondialdehyde content presented certain regularity along the altitude: MDA contents of P. taiwanensis at the northern slope were higher than those at the southern slope at altitude between 1400 m and 1700 m,after which MDA content increased and then went down. With increased elevation, catalase and peroxidase activities of two plants fluctuated in a similar patttern, which decreased after the first rise, and followed by a second rise to a higher level. Superoxide dismutase activity declined after a initial rise, and remianed at the same level at higher altitude. To summarize, this study provided insight into the mechanism of plant in response to stress and lay a foundation for adaptive strategy to climate change.
