In the process of mining and reclamation, the use of large machinery produced mechanical compaction and severe disturbance to soil internal structure. Mechanical compaction not only caused the decrease in the number of soil pores, but also resulted in the decline in the connectivity and permeability. However, as an important place for soil moisture exchange, soil pores determined soil moisture and air condition, and then affected the quality and fertility of reclamation soil. To explore the compaction effect on soil porosity, this paper analyzed the extraction and characterization methods of soil pores under the mechanical compaction in mining area. On this basis, this paper elaborated the progress about the effect of mechanical compaction on soil pores, summarized the problems of current research, and advanced the quantitative characterization method of compacted soil pores when exploring the effect of mechanical compaction on soil pore characteristics in the future. And further research should pay emphasis on the effect mechanism of mechanical compaction on soil pore characteristics in order to provide theoretical guidance for improving the effect of land reclamation in the mining area.
