The west and southwest American desert writing has a long history. The focus of this kind of writing has, generally speaking, undergone three stages: the contempt and conquest of the deserts prior to the end of the 19 th century, the desert esthetics and life systems between the end of the 19 th century and the first half of the 20 th century, and the multi-cultural,de-romanticizing writing primarily by aboriginal writers since the middle of the 20 th century. As a result of all these collective efforts of the writers' community in this region, the barren and useless "wasteland"of western American deserts that used to be excluded from American geographical and cultural borders has, eventually, been cultivated into an energetic, life supporting ecosystem which integrates nature, history and culture. Thus it can be said that the west and southwest American desert writing sets a successful model of literary texts transforming the geographical environment.
