Considering the characteristics of influencing factors of the old goaf stability, such as uncertainty, ambiguity and complexity, the fuzzy mathematics and extenics are integrated in this paper, and a novel model named fuzzy extension model is presented to assess the old goaf stability. Firstly, based on analyzing the influencing factors of the old goaf stability, the assessment factor system was established,in which the qualitative and quantitative indexes were normalized by fuzzy membership function, and the stability criterion was developed; Secondly, fuzzy matter-elements and their classical and extensional fields were constructed based on matter-element theory, and the weights of the influencing factors were determined by fuzzy group decision-making,then the extension dependent function was calculated and the stability level of the old goaf was judged; Finally,a case study was given in this paper, and the final conclusion was accorded with the actual situation. The study shows that fuzzy extension model integrated with the influence of multi-factors is feasible to assess the stability of the old goaf, and it could provide technical support for the buildings which will be built above the goaf.
